Tech dudes and other dudes

I'm looking for a wireless router. House is two level and older so mostly concerned about range, not so much bells and whistles. Would like to spend under $150 and currently am eyeing the Netgear AC1750 and TP-Link AC1900 but reviews seem to be mixed. Am planning on signing up for Charter Internet. Also was planning on using whatever modem Charter brought but would getting my own be best?
